When it comes to cash, the dollar is the King. You can roughly change it for the local dough at every carpet dealer in the Middle East, every Indian market in the Andes or Bus Station in Africa. In Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet union you can come a long way with Euro, which also works in French speaking parts of Africa, because the exchange rate of the CFA (African Franc) is glued to it.

Cash is especially handy if you end up in places without any infrastructure. When you go traveling abroad, we would suggest you use your ATM & credit card in the bigger cities, and save your cash for when there is no bank.
